Antenatal Classes near Towcester, Northampton & Milton Keynes: Which Course Is Right for You?

If you're expecting a baby and searching for antenatal classes near Towcester, Northampton, Buckingham or the surrounding area, chances are you've come across a few options - NCT, Happy Parents Happy Baby, and perhaps The Parent Course by Vicki Wilkinson (me!!). Each offers something different, and it can be hard to know which is the right fit for you and your family.

As someone who has spent 13 years supporting expectant and new parents as a practising birth and postnatal doula, I'm often asked about the differences. So in this post, I'm going to give you an honest, up-to-date comparison, helping you to make the decision that feels right for you.

Spoiler: all three are good courses. The right one depends on what you're looking for, your location, and the level of support you want before and after your baby arrives.

What We'll Cover

•       What each course includes

•       Who leads each course

•       Cost and flexibility

•       Location – what’s actually local to you

•       Which course is right for you

The Parent Course

What is The Parent Course?

The Parent Course is a 15-hour, 6-week antenatal course held in Whittlebury, near Towcester making it the most local option for parents in Towcester, Brackley, Buckingham, Northampton and surrounding villages. It is delivered by me - Vicki, a practising birth and postnatal doula with 13 years of experience supporting families through pregnancy, birth and the early weeks of parenthood. I am truly independant, which means I can tailor my courses to your individual needs.

"I have taken all of my knowledge and experience of supporting parents through birth and incorporated it into this course, designed to help you feel confident, prepared and genuinely ready for what comes next." Vicki

What does The Parent Course include?

The course is delivered over 6 consecutive weeks and covers everything you need to know across three key areas:

•       Birth preparation - including hypnobirthing techniques, breathing, massage, aromatherapy, birth physiology, pain relief and interventions

•       Infant feeding - breastfeeding, bottle feeding, positioning, responsive feeding and getting the support you need

•       Newborn care - calming techniques, newborn sleep, baby massage, understanding your baby's cues and caring for yourself in the fourth trimester

Unlike many antenatal courses, The Parent Course also gives you the flexibility to book individual sessions rather than the full 6-week course, so if you're late in your pregnancy or only need specific topics covered, you can tailor it to your needs.

What makes The Parent Course different?

The key difference is that The Parent Course is led by a practising doula - not a midwife, NCT practitioner or course facilitator. This matters because:

•       I attend births regularly, which means the information I share is grounded in real, current experience, not just classroom knowledge. As I am not affliated to any trust or hospital, I provide honest, impartial education so you can make informed choices on the care you want receive.

•       Hypnobirthing is woven into my birth sessions, not delivered as a online bolt-on

•       You receive detailed electronic notes after each session including videos & ongoing WhatsApp support until your baby is 12 weeks old, meaning I'm available to answer questions long after the course ends.

•       Group sizes are small and intimate, creating a genuinely supportive environment

What does The Parent Course cost?

The full 6-week Parent Course is £270 per couple however individual sessions can also be booked separately, please see the website for current pricing and available dates. What also makes The Parent Course different, is if you can’t make a session then you can join that session on earlier or later course.

Where is The Parent Course held?

The Parent Course takes place at Whittlebury, Towcester - ideally located for families in Towcester, Brackley, Buckingham, Daventry, Northampton and the surrounding villages. This makes it the most accessible truly local option for parents in this area.

NCT

What is NCT?

The NCT (National Childbirth Trust) is a charity that has been running antenatal education in the UK for over 70 years.

What does an NCT course include?

NCT courses cover birth preparation, pain relief options, infant feeding, newborn care and adjusting to parenthood.

•       NCT courses are around 12 hours in total and include access to the NCT Parent Hub, a digital platform with extras including hypnobirthing resources and on-demand newborn talks. However, hypnobirthing is not delivered in-person as part of the course, it's a digital add-on only.

Who leads it?

NCT courses are led by trained NCT practitioners. They're not required to be midwives or doulas, but are trained to NCT's own standard.

What does NCT cost?

In-person NCT courses typically cost around £239 per couple, though discounts are available for lower-income households.

Is NCT available near Towcester or Northampton?

NCT courses are available across the UK, you can check out nct.org.uk for the nearest course to you. Group sizes are capped at 18 and you cannot switch groups once enrolled.

The social side

NCT is well known for helping you meet other local parents and this is often cited as one of its biggest draws.

Happy Parents Happy Baby (HPHB)

What is Happy Parents Happy Baby?

Happy Parents Happy Baby is an antenatal course provider, which have courses in almost 300 locations across the UK, including locally in Northampton and Milton Keynes.

What does HPHB include?

One of HPHB's standout features is the range of specialists involved. Rather than one instructor covering everything, their course brings in seven different experts across four in-person sessions:

•       Midwife (birth preparation and what to expect in labour) - delivered in person

•       Obstetrician (medical questions, interventions and inductions) - delivered online (for all courses nationally running at that time)

•       Hypnobirthing teacher (breathing techniques and positive birth mindset) - delivered in person & online

•       IBCLC feeding specialist (breastfeeding and infant feeding) - delivered online

•       Paediatrician (newborn health and baby care) - delivered in person & online

•       Pelvic health physiotherapist (postnatal recovery) - delivered online

•       Baby first aid instructor (essential safety skills) - delivered in person

Each in-person session is supported by an online course portal with pre-recorded videos, downloadable resources and weekly live Q&A sessions with that week's specialist.

Who leads it?

Course are run by midwives.

What does HPHB cost near you?

Courses cost £229 for two people.

Where are the local HPHB classes held?

•       Northampton

•       Milton Keynes

HPHB: things to consider

HPHB requires you to book the full course so you can't pick individual sessions. If you miss an in-person session for a reason other than a medical one, they aren't able to accommodate swaps to another group.
